Janet Jackson and Beyoncé Knowles – Comparation (1st round)

There is an endless war between Janet Jackson’s fans and Beyoncé’s ones dating back years. This prompted me to gather more information to make a fair comparison between the two. If you look at the title that summarizes the action of this site you will understand that I am a person who admires Beyoncé, both as artist and as a human being. Before starting the series of comparisons I would like to stress that I respect Janet Jackson so much, and I’d like a polite and logical debate based on arguments from both sides. Thank you !

And now, let’s see the content :

1st round – Studio albums : Certifications (I made this comparison based on the certifications because the conditions in which they are granted are changed periodically, according to the decline in sales. It’s harder for artists to sell these days because of the amount of people who download.)

2nd round – Studio albums : Chart peaks (The positions on the charts show the influence and impact that those albums had worldwide, compared with the other materials on the market at their release moments.)

3rd round – Hits : Chart peaks (I didn’t make a “Certification” category like I did for the albums because until 00s the majority of singles didn’t sell good, and the certifications for them weren’t were not given properly.)

4th round – Music videos (On arguments and criteria)

5th round – Performing (On arguments and criteria)

6th round – Acting

7th round – Ability to offer variety (in everything)

8th round – RESULT (A complex conclusion)

That’s it guys! Interesting or what? Let’s start with the 1st round being “Studio albums : Certifications”

Studio albums : Certifications

  •

 2nd album = B’day

Platinum : 15 certifications

Diamond : ———-

  • Total of gold, platinum and diamond certifications : 28
  •

       3rd album = I am…Sasha Fierce

Gold : 8 certifications

Platinum : 25 certifications

Diamond : 2 certifications

  •  Total of gold, platinum and diamond certifications :  35

Total albums with major worldwide impact (over 20 certifications) : 3

Result : So Janet had 2 albums with huge WW impact in 28 years career, from 10 discs. Beyoncé had 3 albums in 7 years career, from 3 releases.

That means that Jackson’s rapidity to have a worldwide phenomenon album is at least four times smaller than Knowles’.

This is completely inaccurate… Tho Janet’s first 2 albums sold poorly, lets report more accurate information… Records Sold, Not Shipped i.e. Certifications (there is a difference) Dangerously in Love = 12 million world wide; Control = 14 million… B-day = 8 million ww; Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814 = 20 million. I am… Sasha fierce = 8.6 million ww; janet. 20 million.
    4 = 3.8 million ww; Velvet Rope = 10 million
Beyoncé = 5 million ww; All for u = 7 million!!! Of all the albums mentioned, the most Bey has sold in the US. alone was 5 million with “Dangerously”… While the most Janet has sold in the US was 8.5 million with “Rhythm”. So with five albums apiece one artists has sold 37.6 while the other has sold 71 million…

This at created by a Beyoncé fan. This isn’t not a music industry conclusion or analysis from billboard or RIAA or Bmg or soundscan. It’s some who selected certain numbers because they don’t anything before Beyoncé.. I give this not credibility. People there was music and sales before Beyoncé. U can’t the person who opened the door to the Person who walked through the door Janet opened. It’s like comparing Martin Luther King to Barack Obama. Martin paved the way so that Obams could be. Stop comparing. History means to go back, history didn’t start with Beyoncé.

First I want to state. There shouldn’t be any comparison. Each of them are different as far as music is concerned. When Janet came on the scene the music was totally different. It was fun, and a transitional. Now a days all you hear about is sex and being naked. The eighties and nineties music was about pure talent and the messages were hidden with clues of what was being sung about and the generation was different. Again now a days everything is about sex and getting high. The generation of today is lost and confused. Janet is in a catagory all by herself. She has nothing to prove to anyone. She paved the way for the Beyonces rihannas etc. Just as Beyonce is in her own category. J is a legend! Longevity. Plus she is multi talented. B is talented but. Longevity is the key.

Janet is way more interesting. Janet is the only artist to have 7 top 5 hits from one album. Janet has been on more magazine covers. Janet is just better and if people can’t see it then there taste needs adjusting.

  6. #6 by Knowledgable on October 9, 2013 - 02:04

Whoever wrote that statement above really didn’t do there homework. First thing, janet has longevity. Janet graduated high school. Janet has been working since 1974. Janet is the second most awarded female artist (behind whitney).janets rhythm nation tour is the most successful debut in the history. Janet signed 2record breaking contracts in the history of modern music. Janet has sold over 150 million records worldwide . Janet retired after being in show business for almost 40 years. Beyoncé is done after 7 years. LOL

  9. #9 by patrick on May 3, 2012 - 01:04

No one sold that much back then and to be fair Janet released an album every 4.5 years.

and janet is older but while beyonce was doing the album after krazy in love janet was doing some movies and relaxing after taking a break for 7 years she is touring now and all over the world where she is touring all her tickets were sold in less than 10 min setting a record pass beyonce selling click on janet sells the most tickets in 10 min thats the queen cant wait till she gets here and she had to make back to back shows the next night at the same arenas causeach first night was already sold out they was also sold out with the other tickets .she was thick in her concerts that is on line but as dates that they show her concerts on shes loosing the weight and look good for 45

the best copying.especially at the billboards. to say youre the best you have to be the best .janet never copied off of beyonce .but beyonce copies off of everybody even if they live in another country.janet is original and has more dance steps beyonce just admitted that she got that billboard performance ideal off you tube that is what she do copy a queen or icon do not use anyone stuff janet leads she has her own style for over 30 years beyonce shakes her ass open her legs add some stolen moves from shakira j lo janet michael its not her shit click on beyonce copies everybody at least she didnt wear that dam booty pad .she lied on a interveiw and said she dont look on the internet after getting busted with that performance she called it an inspiration and said thank god for you tube .she sucks and that video too.she is no wear near an icon .they are praising someone who dont even do her own shit and leave all the other up coming black singers out they show its always 6 or 7 blacks on that show they look stupid now cause they thought she made up that video then she leaned her head to the side like janet and when she called herself going wild shaking her head while she was singing i be dam she was copying the kray voice nicki minaj does every body knows that her trade mark when she sings

Even though beyonce has more sales. If it were not for artist like Janet Jackson who paved the way for her she would not be were she is today. And instead of looking down on her she should show her a little respect.

Regarding album sales in the US according to RIAA, Janet has sold more than Beyonce: 26.5M vs approx 10-11M (RIAA actually doesn’t list Beyonce so I’m estimating based on Dangerously in love being 4x platinum, B-Day 4x and I Am Sasha Fierce 2X).

    I love them both, though.

@ Kelli, that is not a good excuse because at a point and time Janet was as young as Beyonce and I’m sure the “young” audience bought her CDs then, but from the looks of the charts they didn’t.

I can’t wait for the rest of the comparisons!

Thank you so much! I’m waiting to see your opinion on the other rounds to come!
P.S. : “So many times people try to have debates without solid facts or one person is talking about albums while the other is talking about awards. ” – I totally agree with you.

  16. #16 by BeeStan23 on December 22, 2010 - 19:02

I think this is a very interesting debate and I really like how you are doing it. So many times people try to have debates without solid facts or one person is talking about albums while the other is talking about awards. With this you can clearly see how each one has done in certain areas. Thank you for doing this. (:
    P.S. I like your site a lot!

Actually, a lot of younger people don’t buy CDs. I’m a teen and out of all the teens I know 99% of them either A) Buy songs individually on iTunes or B) Download them without paying. But those might just be the people I know.

  18. #18 by kelli on December 22, 2010 - 18:46

beyonce is awesome and everyone knows that i am one of the biggest beyonce fans but i also think janet jackson is awsome and im a fan of hers to and there music is totally different and they reach out to different types of people beyonce reaches out to much more younger crowd and janet to a older crowd there for i think beyonce would have a better chance of selling more albums not because she is better but because younger people are the ones who buy cds most older people dont bother to so its up to the younger people to get the cds and personally if i seen a beyonce and janet cd sitting right next to each other imma pick up the beyonce cd because im young and i can relate more to her music.. there its NOT a fair comparison because its two different types of music reaching out to two different types of crowds of course beyonce a win she have the upper hand but i for one love them both so if i could afford both cds ill buy both!!!
